Heaven on Earth

I never loved you.
You were everything
I resented:
dry, barren, and vacant.
But now I have walked
in the depths
of your ocean.
You still stand and remain
despite a lack of water.
You’re hot then you’re cold.
Your scent ranges from a rodent’s carcass
to earthy,
sweet-smelling
creosote.
Flowers bloom on your sandy surfaces,
pernicious cacti guard your territory.
Heaven on Earth, that I saw as Hell.
Like your bottomless valleys,
with freezing temperatures and starry skies,
my love for you is endless.
