This fall we have a Featured Artist: Barbara Weightman. It was Alaina Bixon, one of our editors, who sought out Barbara. Thanks again, Alaina!
Barbara grew up in Montreal, Canada, and lived in England and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. “Creativity has always been a large part of my life,” she said, “not only in painting but also in my thirty years of being a teacher.”
Her father had studied art and had a home studio. He was Barbara’s artistic inspiration. “He always carried a sketch pad with him, and I loved watching him sketch.” She studied botanical illustration with Joan Frain during her seventeen years in Philadelphia and with Anne-Marie Evans on return visits to England.
“I wanted to challenge myself to see if I could get into juried shows,” Barbara said, “which I did.” She has shown her work in England, Pennsylvania, Washington DC, and California.
When she moved to California, Barbara met renowned oil painter and teacher Valentina Lamdin and began painting in an open studio with her. “Because of her, oil painting has become my new passion,” Barbara said.
Now a resident of Indian Wells, in the Coachella Valley of Southern California, Barbara continues to show her work. She has exhibited with the Artist Council of the Palm Springs Art Museum at the University of California–Riverside, Palm Desert Center; at Artspresso Gallery in Idyllwild; at the CREATE Center for the Arts in Palm Desert; and at the Middle Ridge Winery Tasting Gallery in Idyllwild, among other venues.
